ONE thousand school children are to take part in a special event at Glamis Castle in Angus later this summer, celebrating the best of Scotland's countryside. During the interactive day out, the children will see falconry, terrier and gun dog displays and fly fishing demonstrations, as well as learning about conservation, climate change and food production. Meanwhile experts from dozens of organisations will be on hand to teach the children about the abundance of wildlife in Scotland's woodlands, moorlands and rivers.

There will also be a Food Zone where the kids can taste fresh food, made with local produce.

Organised by the Scottish Countryside Alliance Educational Trust (SCAET), the Countryside Day will bring together S1 and S2 pupils and their teachers from schools in Angus, Dundee, Perth and Kinross, Aberdeenshire and Fife.

The event, on Friday 5 September, will be the curtain raiser to the annual Scotland's Countryside Festival at Glamis which will run all weekend. The Festival will also host the launch of Scottish Food Fortnight, by Rural Affairs Secretary Richard Lochhead.

Nicola Chalmers-Watson, director of SCAET, said: "Scotland's children need to know much more about their countryside. "This event, tailored to the needs of pupils and teachers, will open their eyes to how the countryside works and all the great things that rural Scotland has to offer."
