ONE THOUSAND pupils are to take part in a special event at Glamis Castle this summer celebrating the best of Scotland’s countryside. In a curtain-raiser to Scotland’s Countryside Festival, first and second year secondary pupils from schools in Angus, Dundee, Perth and Kinross, Aberdeenshire and Fife have been invited to enjoy an interactive day at the castle, where they will see falconry, terrier and gun dog displays and fly fishing demonstrations, as well as learning about conservation, climate change and food production.Experts will teach the children about wildlife in woodlands, moorlands and rivers, and at the Food Zone they can taste fresh food, made with local produce. The September 5 event, organised by the Scottish Countryside Alliance Educational Trust (SCAET), precedes the countryside festival and launch of Scottish Food Fortnight by rural affairs secretary Richard Lochhead.SCAET director Nicola Chalmers-Watson, said, “Scotland’s children need to know more about their countryside. This event will open their eyes to how the countryside works and all the great things that rural Scotland has to offer.”
